James was born in Parramatta in Oct 1802. In his youth he received land grants around Parramatta and Bathurst areas. He married Catherine Payne Lloyd in 1835. In 1850 he moved with his family down to Victoria, settling around EdenHope and later to Coleraine.

Of Wootong Vale who departed this life on Oct 31st 1862
In the 60th year of his age
A kind and fond husband. He left a widow and eight children
to mourn their loss. He gained the goodwill of all,
the love of many friends and the gratitude of the distressed.
Also, his wife lies here
